We began our work on this 1940s house by taking inventory of its extensive previous renovations. The house had become disjointed after so many incoherent modifications and it read as a palimpsest of changing fashions. Through our study, we were able to look beyond appearances to see potential in the underlying structure. Stripping back the layers revealed a West Coast gem primed for the kind of minimal design interventions that allow for the eclectic contingencies of everyday life. We hope that by doing so the house has a greater chance of lasting through multiple owners and ultimately staying out of the landfill.
