This is a charred wood siding (cladding). A Japanese treatment called Shou-sugi-ban where the exterior finish of the wood/timber is charred with flame, the cooled, cleaned and prepared for fastening to the building.
The charring protects the wood from rot, bugs, mold and also gives it a level of fire resistance.
It’s been being used by the Japanese for thousands of years
