Measured had the unique opportunity to work on Cleft House in collaboration with EVR Fine Homes, a high-end contracting firm based in Whistler that was familiar with both the site context and the impacts of Whistler’s heavy snow loads on design. This partnership allowed for a rich dialogue regarding the changing needs of a destination community moving to four-season living.
Measured wished for the design solution to suit all four seasons and maintain a strong connection to the magnificent natural surroundings. Nestled into a dramatic rock face, the form reaches out toward Alta Lake. Carefully framed views of lichen-covered rocks combine with soaring views of alpine to vistas situate the owners within their mountain context.
We were able to create an opportunity to tuck the south end of the building into a granite slab, opening up the home to views of the mountains and lakes to the north.”
The house pushes forward the modern agenda while adhering to Whistler traditions of wood, stone and steel. The cruciform-shaped building frames long views to two mountain peaks and the lake, and also creates sheltered exterior spaces in both winter and summer that blur the line between the built and natural environments.
Residents of Whistler for more than 25 years, the family of four experiences the ruggedness of the Whistler landscape they love up close in their year-round home. The family is immersed in natural light and views of the changing weather while enjoying the appointments of high-end Whistler living in an informal, organic setting.
