Measured was asked to rethink a tired 1980s duplex for a downsizing client, with the aim of creating a secret haven in the city that blurs the line between indoor and outdoor rooms.

Idea
More than a renovation, the project represents an evolution in the life of both the building and its occupants, stripping back what no longer serves and reimagining the home as a sanctuary for rest, reflection, and connection, a family hub for gathering.
Build
Measured approached the project with a commitment to revitalization over replacement. The home’s exterior palette was neutralized with a carbon-toned finish, allowing the surrounding landscape, designed by John Minty, to take visual precedence. A previously formal yard, complete with pool and hardscape, was reimagined as a lush cottage garden anchored by indigenous species. The new landscape softens the building’s edges, provides privacy from the nearby walkway, and creates a layered experience of enclosure and openness.
Key outdoor spaces include an exterior dining area positioned at the entry and a firepit for evening gatherings. Together, these elements redefine the property’s relationship to its boundaries. What was once a house in a field is now experienced as a series of courtyards.
Inside, the renovation prioritizes warmth, flow, and informal connection. The main level centres on an open kitchen that now forms the true heart of the home. A former living room was transformed into a welcoming dining space, while a smaller adjoining room serves as a relaxed sitting area.
Upstairs, the second level houses a primary suite and a secondary bedroom, each with its own bath, offering comfort and privacy. The top level accommodates a flexible micro-office and guest area. A new plywood staircase, cut with patterned openings, filters natural light through the home, creating a gentle play of shadow and illumination that ties all three levels together.
A soothing, clean material palette establishes a sense of ease and cohesion throughout. White surfaces provide a foundation for subtle pops of colour and the shifting hues of the garden beyond. The interior becomes a vessel for the clients’ lives, a backdrop for layering in artifacts collected from decades of travel, infusing the modernized home with personal history and warmth.

Live
Ultimately, this project reflects a philosophy of renewal through restraint, grounded in the belief that a home can evolve gracefully alongside its occupants. It represents an architecture of care that prioritizes comfort, familiarity, and belonging, while adapting to change. The result is not a reinvention, but a maturation: a home that carries its history forward while opening itself to the chapters still to come.
