Sam Dunner
I grew up
Vancouver, in a 60s rancher (my family is obsessed with mid-century modern houses)
Education
Bachelor of Commerce, specializing in Entrepreneurship, 2017 / University of British Columbia (I also minored in Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies)
Why Measured?
Measured is constantly evolving, reflecting on itself to innovate and improve. I have a front-row seat to the collaborative approach Clinton and Piers bring to their projects, and as Measured is a small architectural firm, I am afforded opportunities I wouldn’t get at large firms.
I’m drawn to design because
Somewhere along my education road, I became interested in the intersection of commerce and design. Plus, this environment is motivating. Everyone loves what they are doing and support one another. It’s motivating and inspiring to be here on a daily basis.
Favourite space
The Neues Museum in Berlin. It houses some of the most important antiquities in the world, and does so in a thoughtful, considered way. I left that building with an incredible appreciate for design – David Chipperfield did a wonderful job with the renovation.
I love working with clients because
They want to be involved in the process. Their passion and dedication brings out the best in our firm, pushing us to find new, alternative solutions to design challenges.
Felt tip or ball point?
Felt tip
Go-to morning drink
Espresso. Double Shot. Black.
I’m surprisingly good at
Badminton. I am a former nationally ranked player, and have competed at the World Junior Championships and two Jr Pan American Games.
When I’m not working you can find me
Taking weekend trips around the Pacific Northwest. Lately I’ve been exploring Vancouver Island, finding new trails with friends and experimenting with film photography.
My favourite vacation
Sicily, 2015. I was an amateur archaeologist for a month on an almond farm. My apartment was the loft of a old church 200 feet from site, our overseer one of the eminent scholars on early Greek and Roman activity in the Mediterranean.
